When relationships feel like it's too much
Today, the The New York Times reported on the decline of knowledge work. If someone told us not that long ago that we would be having mainstream conversations about what to do when robots replace the world's most powerful—doctors, lawyers, engineers, and bankers—we would have called it science fiction.
Just moments ago, AI was in its infancy and *today* you could receive a call from your spouse and not know if you were speaking to man or machine.
It's interesting, isn't it, to watch the stunning speed at which artificial intelligence develops. Note how the world has not a shred of doubt believing in the power of these people who build in a language of 0's and 1's.
If you read me, I know you possess an extraordinary capacity for relational intelligence. While you might not have the perfect words for it, you know that the only thing that will save the world is upgrading our approach to relationships. You know that the most exceptional form of intelligence is relational intelligence. We will colonize Mars before we learn how to speak intelligently to people whose cooperation we need to advance our *own* lives.
You know nature speaks in a language of balance. And although change is natural, there is something distorted about what is occurring. This is because your brain has 2 core systems—a cognitive system and an affective (or emotional) system.
Most people—people who do not understand how the brain works—will tell you that the problem is there is too much information in the field— too many options, too much news, too many opinions.
This is not the problem.
The amount of information is not the problem.
The problem is what all this information is doing to the brain’s emotional systems. Look and you immediately see the problem is occurring in the emotional—not the cognitive—domain. It’s not that people are exposed to too much information; it’s how they feel about the information:
too anxious
too scared
too aggressive
too frustrated
too hopeless
too uncertain
You don’t need a PhD in psychology to understand: These are all feeling states.
If you’re a leader and believe you have a part to play in delivering relief at this moment in history—to your team, to your family, to yourself—then know that there are only 2 paths:
Reduce informational noise in the field
Become more emotionally powerful in the face of it.
If you’re ready to upgrade your relational operating system, come learn how your brain creates powerful connections. When you understand how your brain meets reality, you are restored to sovereignty. And when you walk yourself back to power, you show everyone else the way home, too.
The future is here. What it looks like depends on the type of people who lead it.
If you're ready, I'm here to prepare you.
See you in April. Price increases Monday.
